Power to Heal Campaign

2017 Power to Heal Campaign

MedStar Health launched the 2017 Giving: The Power to Heal Campaign on Monday, Oct. 2. This campaign invites associates and physicians to invest through philanthropy and support patient experience initiatives across the system.

A Focus on Patient Experience

Our focus this year is to support, enhance, and sustain a selection of patient experience initiatives.

In collaboration with leadership and the Power to Heal Campaign Committees, we have developed specific initiative that will benefit our patient and family experience.

Gratitude has the Power to Heal

We will celebrate our growing culture of gratitude by creating awareness about philanthropy and how it can impact our patients and their families. Expressions of gratitude have been shown to increase positivity and happiness, deepening our relationships with one another.

Born earlier this year, Ian Alexander Anthony had an uncomplicated hospital stay, passing all of his tests with flying colors. One of his nurses, Karen Indgjer, was performing a normal discharge assessment when she detected a heart murmur. She immediately notified the care team and Ian was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart defect. Ian was transferred to Children’s National Hospital where he underwent open heart surgery.

After his recovery, the Anthony family came back to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital to express their extreme thanks to the whole care team, especially Karen.  The union formed between Karen and the family has blossomed from professional to personal. “Generally, the relationship with my patients ends upon discharge, but after helping to save Ian's life, his family and I become connected. This bond is what I'm most grateful for today,” Karen said.
