Women's Health & Family Birthing Center
The birth of a baby is an experience to be treasured forever. With a tradition of caring, the birthing experience at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital is centered on creating a comfortable environment for both the mother-to-be and her family. We believe that the concept of family is one of the most important threads bringing our community together. Our Women's Health & Family Birthing Center offers beautiful surroundings and the most advanced care available to patients.
We proudly offer advanced technology, such as our telemedicine programs with the University of Maryland and Children's National Medical Center. These innovative systems allow our patients to stay close-to-home while receiving expert care from top specialists in the region. In addition to these links, the hospital's Imaging Department has specialized 4-D ultrasound equipment, allowing doctors and sonographers to analyze fetal movement in the earliest stages of development. Combining progressive technology with compassionate care, our highly trained staff considers it a privilege to share in your birthing experience!

Baby-Friendly Designated Facility
MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is one of only seven hospitals in the state that has received the prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The BFHI encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Based on the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this prestigious international award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies
Our hospital has been recognized for reducing the number of non-medically indicated elective deliveries performed before 39 completed weeks of pregnancy. Babies delivered before full-term face an increased risk of serious health problems and death in their first year of life. This recognition applauds our commitment to providing the best care for mothers and babies. MedStar St. Mary's Hospital is one of only seven hospitals in the Maryland region to meet the criteria for this accolade and will be awarded a 39 Weeks recognition banner from the March of Dimes and the Maryland Patient Safety Center & Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The Comforts of Home
Designed to nurture our mothers-to-be, each of the five birthing rooms is furnished with the ambiance of home. Eleven postpartum suites complete the floor and were specifically created to accommodate families sharing in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
When it's time for your little one to make his or her arrival, ensuring that you have a safe and positive experience is our ultimate goal. Our comfortable birthing suites are appointed with hardwood floors, a comfortable rocker next to the bed, a television and even a stereo to play relaxing music throughout your labor. Additionally, we've added a sleeper sofa so that a supportive friend or family member can remain by your side throughout your stay.
And after your birthing experience, you'll enjoy relaxing in one of our beautiful and private postpartum suites. Because our focus is on family, these suites were designed specifically to accommodate visiting siblings and other relatives. Each suite contains many of the comforts of home, including a full shower and other facilities.
Care for the Whole Nine Months and Beyond
At MedStar St. Mary's Hospital, we understand that your family's well-being is of the utmost importance. During this special time, your obstetrician may suggest that you consult with a physician specializing in high-risk pregnancy. In the past, making an office visit to see a specialist involved spending several hours on the road, navigating unfamiliar streets and battling rush-hour traffic. However, with the implementation of our telemedicine program, consulting with an expert is as easy as driving to our facility.
Throughout your pregnancy, you may need to make an occasional visit to our facility. Our Women's Health & Family Birthing Center offers a bright, efficient Maternal Outpatient Testing Suite for you to receive streamlined care as needed during pregnancy and postpartum. Our attentive staff members will do their best to ensure that each visit is a positive experience for you and your family.
