The physician who admits you is responsible for directing your care while you are a patient in the hospital. Your physician, as the coordinator for your treatment program, should be consulted if you have questions about your illness.
The hospital is pleased to have a diverse and talented Medical Staff with many specialties represented. The majority of our physicians are board certified. If you need a physician referral, please call our Medical Staff Office at 301-475-6088.
Nursing care is provided 24 hours a day by a team of professional registered nurses and nurse technicians. A charge nurse is responsible for directing and coordinating nursing care on each unit. Please feel free to contact your nurse or the charge nurse if you have questions or concerns.
While you are a patient at MedStar St. Mary's, you will be visited by many healthcare professionals other than doctors and nurses. For example, radiology technicians; physical, occupational and speech therapists; registered dietitians; and respiratory therapists may participate in your treatment plan as well. All MedStar St. Mary's Hospital staff members wear photo identification badges indicating their name and position so you can identify them easily.
Our hospitalists are available to visit with you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They do not have individual practices outside of our hospital and are dedicated to treating and caring for patients admitted to our facility.
These physicians will manage and coordinate your care from admission to discharge. A hospitalist will be in frequent contact with your primary doctor on every aspect of your medical care, whether your admission was planned or the result of an emergency.
What are my hospitalist's qualifications?
Our hospitalists are not residents or physicians-in-training. They are highly qualified, fully trained physicians who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients. Our adult and pediatric hospitalists are either board certified or board eligible.
Case management is the process in which skilled registered nurses, known as case managers, assist patients and direct caregivers through the healing process to discharge. Case managers make sure that tests, procedures and activities deemed critical to patients are performed as efficiently as possible while working with patients and families to optimize discharge plans. When life is measured in months rather than years and when curative treatments are no longer effective, Hospice can help. Hospice is a concept of care that provides pain and symptom management as well as supportive services for terminally ill people and their families. Hospice patients are cared for at home, at the six-bed Hospice House of St. Mary's in Callaway, Maryland, or in a nursing home by an interdisciplinary team of professionals and volunteers who address the physical, spiritual and emotional pain of the patient and loved ones.
