Final 12-month countdown begins this October!

MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s nurses are starting the final leg of a journey that started more than two years ago – the Journey to Magnet Excellence®. In 2013, the nurses at MedStar St. Mary’s began working toward earning Magnet designation through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  The application was submitted on Oct. 27, 2014, and the supporting documentation is slated to be submitted Oct. 1, 2016.

Magnet Recognition is the highest and most prestigious award a healthcare organization can achieve for nursing excellence and quality patient care. Only about 6 percent of U.S. hospitals achieve Magnet designation.  There are currently 389 Magnet hospitals in the nation and 26 of those are in California.

Hospitals that achieve Magnet designation have been shown to have higher nurse retention rates and job satisfaction, improved patient outcomes, strong teamwork, a culture of shared decision making, and support for professional growth and educational opportunities.

As part of the Magnet journey, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital created a Nursing Professional Practice Model to serve as a visual reminder of our Care Delivery System, which combines team nursing and primary nursing to achieve high-quality, relationship-based care. This month, Professional Practice Model Posters will be delivered to nursing units and nurses will be asked to sign them as part of their commitment to the Magnet journey.

The hospital internal newsletter, The Pulse, will feature a series of articles during the next 12 months based on the five components of the Magnet Model: Transformational Leadership; Structural Empowerment; Exemplary Professional Practice; New Knowledge; Innovations and Improvements; and Empirical Outcomes. In addition, each month we will be running a quote from an associate explaining what Magnet means to them. There will also be several fun Magnet-centered events planned throughout the year to help keep up our momentum as we get closer to our destination.

So stay tuned, and join us on the Road to Magnet.

Packing Our Bags

We are finishing packing our Magnet suitcase and preparing to hit the road headed for our final destination –Magnet designation! As each nursing unit signs its Nursing Professional Practice Model poster, a “sticker” representing their department will be added to our suitcase.

The suitcase will be on display and featured each month in The Pulse so that everyone can see our continued commitment to the Magnet journey.
