As an acute care facility, the MedStar St. Mary's Hospital Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergency medical situations. Our goal is to care for all individuals who enter our unit with the utmost sensitivity and compassion. After an initial assessment, patients are cared for based on the nature of the illness or injury. Those in life-threatening, critical-care situations are always given top priority, and helicopter transport is available to rapidly transport critically ill patients to other facilities, when needed.
In order to provide care and protect patient privacy, visitors are allowed only at the discretion of the staff. Visits may not be permitted during some treatments or procedures.
